Local preview
Public installers are not available yet. An earlier preview passed automated checks on Windows x64, Linux x64, Intel Mac and Apple silicon. Consumer installation and recovery checks and trusted release signing are still pending. Public source downloads are also pending; the developer setup below is for people who already have a source checkout.
The 30 September 2026 preview (revision af4a5ab) passed automated checks of the source app, packaged app and installer on all four targets, including saved-work recovery. Those results apply to that preview. A public release needs checks on the exact installer files being offered, alongside consumer acceptance and signing.
Windows previews are unsigned, and Mac previews are not notarised or trusted by Gatekeeper. Linux checks used a prepared test environment; installation on a standard Ubuntu desktop still needs checking. These results do not establish readiness for everyday use.

If you already have access to the source and are comfortable running commands, start in a checkout of the TaxSorted source, with Git, Node.js 22 and npm installed. Create a separate project, install its dependencies, then build and open the app. Dependency installation needs an internet connection; using the built app does not.
node scripts/create-local-project.mjs ../my-taxsorted
cd ../my-taxsorted
npm ci
npm run desktop:install-runtime
npm run desktop:build
npm run desktop:startThe scaffold copies source files and excludes app profiles and known private paths. Copies run by the same operating-system account share the app’s existing profile. Use separate computer accounts for different people’s private records. Build an installer on each target operating system; each platform needs its own testing.

Open toolTaxSorted Account sign-in, HMRC connections and submissions, provider sync, and live public data need online services and are unavailable in the local app. Use manual entry or CSV import for your records. Preparing figures does not file a return. Guides and rules are the versions bundled with the app; updating them requires a newer build.
03 · Your data
The app keeps money records, saved Passport and preparation drafts, checklists and preferences in its own local app profile. This is separate from taxsorted.io in your browser. Existing website data is not moved into the app automatically. It has no cloud backup, sync or automatic update service.
Workspace backups are password-protected; Books-only backups also offer protection by default. TaxSorted does not encrypt the live app profile, Passport exports or other ordinary exports. Your operating system’s account controls and disk protection still matter.
Keep backups somewhere you control before removing the app profile or moving to another computer. Workspace backups include saved preparation for 2025–26 and 2026–27; unsaved forms, original documents, receipt attachments, account sign-in details, provider permissions and preferences are excluded. Older Books-only backups still restore through Money records → Backups.
Ordinary Passport exports and preparation summaries remain unencrypted handovers. Use a workspace backup to restore the saved drafts.
